Understanding Sizing - The Bobbin Bloom

A Size is Just a Letter

We created the A-O system so you can find your perfect size without the negative emotions associated with traditional numbers. Whether you're a size A or size O, each letter simply represents measurements, not your worth.

"Your size doesn't define you. Your creativity, your passion for sewing, and the beautiful garments you'll create do."

Plus, this system eliminates international confusion: what's an XS in one country may be different in another. With our letters and specific measurements in both centimeters and inches, you'll always know exactly what to expect.

How to Use This Chart

Follow these simple steps to find your perfect size

1

Take Your Measurements

Measure your bust, waist, and hips following our measurement guide. Use a flexible measuring tape and maintain a natural posture.

2

Find Your Letter

Look in the chart for the letter that corresponds to your measurements. If your measurements fall into different letters, don't worry—that's completely normal.

3

Choose Your Fit

If you're between two sizes, choose based on the fit you prefer: closer fitting (smaller size) or more relaxed (larger size).

Fit Types

Every pattern has its own personality — some are more relaxed, others more fitted. Knowing the general fit will help you choose the size that gives you the look and feel you love most.

Your Measurements in Different Letters?

This is completely normal and very common! Few bodies match exactly with a single column in the chart.

tipPro Tip

If your bust is size D, your waist is E, and your hips are F, we recommend:

  • For tops and dresses: cut according to your bust measurement
  • For skirts and pants: cut according to your hip measurement
  • Then adjust the other areas as needed

Remember:Patterns are starting points. Customizing them for your unique body is part of the magic of sewing your own clothes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if my measurements are between two sizes?

Choose the size based on the fit you prefer and the type of garment. For fitted garments, consider the size closest to your bust measurement (for tops) or hips (for bottoms). For more relaxed garments, you can go with the larger size.

Do patterns include seam allowance?

Yes, all our patterns include 1/2" (1.2 cm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated in the specific pattern instructions.

How do I know how much ease a pattern has?

Each pattern includes a finished measurements table showing approximately half of the garment's final dimensions. To determine the ease, simply subtract your body measurement from the finished garment measurement. For example, if the finished bust measurement is 100 cm (39.5") and your bust is 92 cm (36"), the pattern has 8 cm (3") of ease. This helps you understand exactly how the garment will fit your body.

Can I modify the patterns?

Absolutely! Our patterns are designed to be customizable. You can adjust lengths, add or reduce ease, and make other modifications to suit your preferences and body. Pattern adjustments are a normal part of sewing and help you create garments that fit your unique shape perfectly.

Do I need to re-measure myself regularly?

We recommend taking your measurements every 6 months or if you notice changes in how your clothes fit. Bodies naturally change and that's okay. Your current measurements are the right ones for you now.
